Twenty-seven student-led ventures have emerged as finalists for the 2024 ASU Innovation Open.

Collegiate entrepreneurs will pitch to compete for a share of more than $400,000 in prizes

TEMPE, Ariz. — Twenty-seven student-led ventures have emerged as finalists for the 2024 ASU Innovation Open. ASUio is a unique opportunity for top collegiate entrepreneurs to take their ventures to the next level.

Enterprising students from the finalist teams will converge on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus in February to pitch their tech solutions and learn who among them will leave with their share of more than $400,000 in non-diluted cash prizes —  the largest amount for a university-sponsored event in the country — to support their venture.

Powered by the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at ASU and the eSeed Challenge from the Prescott Student Venture Fund, the ASU Innovation Open is designed to advance student-led startups that are harnessing the power of entrepreneurship to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges. The young innovators will receive valuable mentorship, networking opportunities and the opportunity to accelerate their venture’s growth at the event, scheduled for Friday, February 9, 2024.

This year’s competition attracted applicant teams from more than 80 universities worldwide. Their solutions represent various of technology innovations, including health care, sustainability and social entrepreneurship.

“This event gives students the opportunity to showcase practical applications of the translational research many of them have encountered in the lab or their classrooms,” says Kyle Squires, dean of the Fulton Schools of Engineering. “Securing investment is challenging, but this competition helps students jumpstart bringing their ideas to market. It’s exciting to know that, thanks to ASUio’s generous supporters, the winners will earn much-needed capital and the encouragement to make an impact through engineering.”

Monetary sponsors include Intel, Source Global, Avnet, Arizona Board of Regents, Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative and the eSeed Challenge. For SOURCE Global Founder and CEO Cody Friesen, who graduated from ASU and is the Fulton Engineering Professor of Innovation at the university, ASUio is a true passion.

“Building a scalable company that sells a physical product is incredibly difficult. I’ve experienced the rollercoaster of entrepreneurship myself, and it’s not for the faint of heart,” Friesen said. “The professor and science nerd in me loves seeing what ideas teams comprised of interdisciplinary students come up with to try and tackle some truly daunting challenges.”

At the 2024 ASUio event, student representatives from each company will pitch their ventures to a team of business leaders, tech innovators and engineers from across the Phoenix metropolitan area. These technology startups offered solutions ranging from climate technology and renewable energy innovations to systems and products that have the potential to improve human health and agricultural health.
